The absence of a slur in the editions is almost certainly a consequence of the omission by the engraver of GE1. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in GE |

In the main text we reproduce the clearly written slurs of A, although it is uncertain whether by differentiating the range of these slurs Chopin really wanted to suggest a detail of articulation. Both remaining, unified versions of slurring can be regarded as equivalent variants. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccurate slurs in A |

Wherever both hands move in parallel, Chopin very often considered markings written over the R.H. to be concerning both hands, particularly when both parts are written on one stave (cf., e.g. the Ballade in G minor, Op. 23, bars 1-5 and 251-256). Separate articulation markings for the L.H. in such contexts were one of the most frequently encountered editorial revisions. On the other hand, in the Variations Chopin himself wrote such markings a few times, e.g. at the beginning of Variation II (bars 135-137) and in the ending (bars 375-380). In this situation, being uncertain as to the authenticity of the dots and slur added in GE (→FE,EE), we do not include them in the main text. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions |

In accordance with the General Editorial Principles, p. 16, in the main text we omit the 4 slurs present in the majority of the sources; these slurs are part of the triplet markings, and they unnecessarily overlap the articulation slurs of the same range. The slurs were also omitted by FESB. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: FE revisions , Triplet slurs |

The missing lower slur must be an oversight by the engraver of GE1. Such multiple slurs were used by Chopin quite rarely, most often in his early pieces – cf. the combination of chords in bar 266 or 295-296, or pairs of octaves in the Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, mov. III, bars 472-480. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in GE |
