b. 62-64

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

As is the case with the remaining similar bars, in FE (→EE) it is only the top note of the 1st R.H. octave that is separated as a crotchet. It must be a mistake, which is proven by the dots prolonging both notes of the octaves in analogous b. 36-40. To the main text we adopt the undoubtedly correct notation of GE.

Crotchets in GE & FE1

Dotted crotchets in FE2 & EE

..

In the main text we include the dots prolonging the octaves at the beginning of these bars, added in the stage of proofreading of FE2 and EE1. Admittedly, they were not proofread by Chopin, yet his participation in the development of this impression cannot be ruled out completely, while a comparison with the undoubtedly authentic dots in similar b. 37-40 and 65-66 makes us consider that addition to be right. b. 62-64

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

The issue whether the accidentals to the small notes apply to the normal-sized notes was not clearly stated in Chopin's time, as it turns out. In GE and FE there is no accidental before the bottom note of the L.H. chord on the 3rd beat in b. 62 and 63, d, which, at least theoretically, can be misleading. Naturals were only added in EE – in EE1 in b. 63 and in EE2 in b. 62.

FE2 added a not so justified cautionary  before d2 in b. 63. The accidental is also present in EE which added yet other cautionary naturals – before d2 in b. 62 and 64 as well as d1 in b. 63-64.

In the main text we include only the naturals before d in b. 62-63.
Naturals in those places were also being added in the analogous b. 295-297.

b. 65-80

Pedalling in GE

No markings in FE (→EE)

..

In the main text we include the pedal markings of GE, entered probably into [A] after [FC] had already been finished. We discuss b. 71 and 72-73 separately; in those bars the markings are also absent in GE.

[ ] suggested by the editors

..

A comparison with almost identical b. 39 suggests that the missing pedal markings on the 1st beat of the discussed bar are Chopin's oversight. Due to that reason, in the main text we suggest a respective addition.
