b. 129

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

No markings in FE1 (→GE,EE)

Accent in FEO

Our variant suggestion

..

It is highly likely that the accent in the FEO teaching copy was added by Chopin, hence we include it in the main text in a variant form.

b. 133

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Staccato dots in FE (→EE)

No staccato dots in GE

..

The absence of staccato dots in GE must be a mistake, since dots are present in the L.H. part.

b. 134-140

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

Most of the wedges present in FE (→EE) were arbitrarily changed to staccato dots in GE – see the note in bar 7. As the change covers all wedges included in GE, we consider the version of this edition to be one variant, on this page encompassing generally 4 marks in bar 134 and 139-140, yet we discuss the L.H. mark at the beginning of bar 140 separately due to other source issues.

b. 140

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Wedge in FE

Staccato dot in GE & EE

..

The change of wedges to staccato dots in GE resulted from general revision of this publisher – see the note in bar 7. On the other hand, the dot in EE, in which the wedges printed in FE were generally preserved, was most probably introduced to standardise the L.H. marks in this and the preceding bar. The changes rather cannot be authentic, hence in the main text we keep the FE wedge.

b. 145-164

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Wedges in FE (→EE)

Staccato dots in GE

..

Most of the wedges present in FE (→EE) were arbitrarily changed to staccato dots in GE – see the note in bar 7. As the change covers all wedges included in GE, we consider the version of this edition to be one variant, on this page encompassing 22 marks in bars 145-146, 148-149, 151 and 153-164. We discuss the omitted marks in all or some editions separately – see the notes in bar 146, 151, 156 and 161-163.
