b. 32-33

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Slur from g1 in FE (literal reading→GE,EE)

Slur from f1 suggested by the editors

..

The FE slur was printed inaccurately – it clearly starts before the crotchet in bar 33, but not before the bar line, hence in GE and EE it does not include the upbeat. A comparison with the slur over the repetition of this phrase in bars 34-36 proves that this interpretation is wrong. Slurs starting from the upbeat appear also in the opera's original score, both in the orchestral introduction and the solo part.

Our variant suggestion

..

It is possible that  was added to GE by Chopin, hence in the main text we include it in a variant form. However, according to us, using this subtle kind of dynamics in this naturally simple theme seems to be excessive.

The  symbol present in the metronome marking in FE (→EE), corresponding neither to the beat nor to the movement unit (quaver), is most probably a mistake. Such situations occur in other pieces by Chopin as well, cf., e.g. the Andante spianato from Op. 22. Therefore, in the main text we provide , as it was already done in GE.

No slur in FE

Slur in GE & EE

Our variant suggestion

..

In this kind of texture, in which the parts of both hands move in parallel or at least in the same rhythm (as in bars 37-38), Chopin would often settle for a slur over the top voice; however, he would also use double slurs quite frequently (cf., e.g. the middle fragment of the Larghetto from the Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, in which only some phrases are provided with single slurs, e.g. from bar 57). Taking into account the possibility that we could be dealing here with authentic GE proofreading, in the main text we suggest a slur in brackets. The slur added in EE must be due to revision, often encountered in similar situations.

The missing augmentation dot to the second d crotchet in FE (→EE) is most probably a mistake, corrected in GE – in the original opera score this d is simply a dotted minim. Therefore, in the main text we propose this notation with a minim as it is simpler and clearer.
