Slurs

b. 284-285

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slurs to b2 & from c3 in A, literal reading

Slurs to a3 & from g3 in GE (→FE)

Slurs to b2 & from g3 in EE & IE

Slurs to g3 & from c3, our alternative suggestion

3 slurs, our different suggestion

..

The extension of the slur in bar 284 in GE is most probably a routine revision assuming that the A slur is inaccurate; actually, it looks as if Chopin stopped writing it after having encountered an obstacle in the form of the a3 quaver. In this context, the similarity between A and the slurs in EE and IE could be puzzling; perhaps the GE slur was changed in the last stage of proofreading – cf. bar 225. In GE (→FE,EE,IE) the described change is accompanied by an earlier starting point of the slur in bar 285, as a result of which all quavers in this fragment are encompassed by slurs. This change is unarguably contrary to the A notation.
In the main text we reproduce the A slurs, as it is uncertain whether they are inaccurate or not – perhaps Chopin wanted to lead the slur from bar 284 to g3 at the beginning of bar 285, which is suggested by the following slurs, or simply embrace a3-g3 with a slur, as he did in a similar situation in bars 73-74.

b. 293

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur from F1 in A & EE

Slur from F in GE (→FE,IE)

..

The earlier starting point of the slur in GE (→FE,IE) is either a routine revision, adjusting a slur to a rhythmic group (in this case a bar), or an inaccuracy. The EE version could have resulted from a misinterpretation of the GE slur, and its compliance with the A notation is almost certainly accidental.

b. 296

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Tie to f in A

Slur a-g in GE (→FE,EE1,IE)

Slur & tie in EE2

..

The version of the majority of the editions resulted from a misinterpretation of the tie to f as a slur referring to the R.H. top voice. The authentic tie was added in EE2, most probably by analogy with bar 308.

b. 305

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

F1-c slur in A, literal reading

F1-e slur in A, possible interpretation

F-e slur in A, contextual interpretation & GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

When interpreted literally, the A slur encompasses more or less the notes ranging from F1 to c; it is undoubtedly inaccurate in this form. In this situation it seems natural to lead it to the end of the bar, yet in the main text we include the interpretation adopted by GE (→FE,EE,IE), in which the slur starts from the 2nd quaver, as Chopin clearly wrote it in a similar context in bar 293 and in the entire group of similar figures in bar 154, 162-163, 166-167, 170-171.

b. 326-327

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Tie to f1 in A (→GEFE,IE)

Slur at c1 in EE

..

The unclear version of EE results from a double error by the engraver, who placed the tie (slur?) in bar 326 (at the end of the line) at c1 instead of f1, and omitted its ending in bar 327.
