Slurs

b. 252-253

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur to 4th quaver in A, literal reading

Slur to a3 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

Slur to b. 253, our suggestion

..

The A slur must be inaccurate, as it only reaches f3 – cf. the endings of the analogous slurs in bars 244-245 and 248-249. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a slur to g3 in bar 253, modelled after those slurs. In GE (→FE,EE,IE) the slur was routinely revised by extending it to the end of the bar.

b. 257-265

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

No slurs in sources

2 slurs suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we suggest slurs modelled on the ones precisely marked by Chopin in the analogous phrases in bars 56-64.

b. 276

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

2 slurs in A

Continuous slur in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The A slurs were almost certainly divided due to graphical reasons – Chopin would generally write slurs on the side of noteheads, often at the expense of accuracy, cf., e.g. I mov., bars 179-183. The fact that this version was left in A allows us to assume that Chopin considered both variants of slurs to be equal, hence in the main text we provide the continuous slur of GE (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 281-282

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur from c1 to g1 in A, literal reading

Slur from c1 to a1 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

It is difficult to imagine that the literal interpretation of the A slur, which does not include 3 (or 2) outermost quavers belonging to the chromatic scale, could have corresponded to Chopin's intention. Therefore, we consider it one of the many inaccuracies of A in this respect; in the main text we include the interpretation of this slur adopted to GE (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 282-283

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slurs in A

No slurs in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The omission of the slurs/ties between the chords is an oversight by the engraver of GE (→FE,EE,IE). It cannot be ruled out that the engraver did not insert the slurs due to doubts regarding their significance and position with respect to the arpeggio wavy line.
Regardless of the possible dilemmas of the engraver of GE, the meaning of the bottom-most slur/tie concerning c is unclear – if c were to be tied, the arpeggio of the chord in bar 283 would concern only the top 3 notes, contrary to the notation. This resembles the issue discussed in bars 4-6
