Description of the digitalization and archiving process

The Fryderyk Chopin Institute has been digitalizing its collections especially for the needs of the mUltimate Chopin project. The equipment used for taking photographs consists of:

– SINAR p/3 camera on optical bench
– 2 broncolor pulso lamps, broncolor pulsoflex EM, manfrotto tripods
– Sinarback eVolution 75 H digital back with 4-shot mode.

The photo of each page is saved in the TIFF format without compression, resolution 600 dpi, profile: rgb or cmyk, 16-bit to 24-bit colour depth.

Sources requested from foreign libraries in the digital form will be prepared according to the following digitalization route:
– evaluation of the condition of the sources to be digitalized;
– scanning in a separate room prepared especially for the digitalization process;
– proper calibration of digitalization equipment;
– resolution 600 dpi, 16-bit or 24-bit RGB colour depth, optical density D-2;
– quality control of output scans;
– master scans will be saved as TIFF files without compression;
– the scanning process performed in compliance with the internal, autonomous instructions of each library.

We digitalize covers as well as blank pages, if found in autographs or editions, as they very often contain stamps or notes important for our work and for future users of a given source. Folders will be created and digital files named according to the model saving path of the Digitalization Good Practices and Standards Catalogue.

The producers of the database made available at this site are the Foundation for the National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute.
