Slurs
b. 23
|
composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major
..
The FE slur is inaccurate – it ends between the 4th and 5th semiquaver. We reproduce it – as in GE and EE – as a slur encompassing the 1st beat only. On the other hand, in the main text we suggest a slur encompassing the entire R.H. figure, in accordance with the subsequent figures. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Inaccuracies in FE |

b. 25
|
composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major
..
The inconsistent slurs in FE (→GE) are most likely inaccurate, perhaps due to imprecise notation in [A]. In the main text, we standardize slurs according to the division into hands indicated by the graphic layout. An attempt at partial standardization was also made in EE. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions |

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

In FE the second rhythmic group in the L.H. part is provided neither with a slur nor with a wedge, which is either the engraver's oversight or Chopin's inadvertence. The marks were added in GE and EE, yet in GE the wedge was changed to a staccato dot as part of general revision – see the note in bar 20. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , GE revisions |

b. 30-31
|
composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major
..
It is highly unlikely that both GE and EE could have overlooked a clearly printed slur. Therefore, the slur was most probably added by Chopin in the last stage of proofreading FE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 32-33
|
composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major
..
The FE slur was printed inaccurately – it clearly starts before the crotchet in bar 33, but not before the bar line, hence in GE and EE it does not include the upbeat. A comparison with the slur over the repetition of this phrase in bars 34-36 proves that this interpretation is wrong. Slurs starting from the upbeat appear also in the opera's original score, both in the orchestral introduction and the solo part. category imprint: Editorial revisions issues: Inaccuracies in FE |
