Slurs

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Slur to b. 8 in FE (→GE,EE), possible interpretation

Slur in b. 7, interpretation suggested by editors

..

The slurring in the sources is unclear – the slur at the end of the line (in bar 7) reaches only the last semiquaver, so it is not known what continues the slur reaching the g2 crotchet at the beginning of bar 8. In the editors' opinion, leading the slur to the crotchet in bar 8 is less natural due to the repeated striking of this note and the accent. Therefore, we consider it more likely that the slur in bar 8 was mistakenly engraved.

issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Uncertain slur continuation

b. 16-17

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

No slur in FE (→GE,EE)

Slur suggested by the editors

..

It seems unlikely that the absence of a slur over the three-note descending chromatic motif could have been related to a change in articulation. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a slur filling the gap in the coherent phrasing in the adjacent bars.

b. 19-20

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Slur to c3 in FE (literal reading→GE,EE)

Slur to a2 in FE, contextual interpretation

..

The scope of the slur in the 2nd half of bar 19 is unclear in FE – this bar is the last in the line and the slur suggests continuation, but there is no conclusion to it in bar 20. Taking into account the slur over an identical motif in bars 20-21, we can be sure that the mistake was made at the beginning of bar 20, and the slur is supposed to reach a2 in bar 20. This is how we reproduce it in the main text, then.

b. 20

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

No slur in FE (→GE,EE)

Slur suggested by editors

..

The slurs in similar situations in bar 19 and 21-22 suggest that the absence of a slur in the discussed bar is most probably an oversight by the engraver or by Chopin himself. Due to the above, in the main text we suggest adding a slur after bar 22.

b. 21

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Slur over quavers in FE (→GE,EE)

Slur to crotchet suggested by editors

..

Taking into account the fact that the slurs in similar situations in bar 19 and 22 encompass the entire motif of the L.H. top voice, we consider the FE slur (→GE,EE) to be inaccurate; in the main text we suggest leading it to the e1-c2 crotchet.
