composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

It seems unlikely that the absence of these two slurs in FE (→GE,EE) could indicate a change in the performance manner compared to the similar figures, hence in the main text we suggest adding them. The slur in bar 138 is modelled on an authentic slur in bar 120, while the slur in bar 140 on the slurs in the preceding bar, yet in this case we lead it to the end of the passage, as in bar 134. category imprint: Editorial revisions |

According to us, it is more likely that the [A] slurs were inaccurately written or interpreted than they were shortened in relation to the similar motifs in bar 121 and 123. Therefore, in the main text we provide slurs modelled after the aforementioned bars. category imprint: Editorial revisions |

The coincidence of triplet and motivic slurs in FE prompted the revisers of the remaining editions to intervene (the GE version could have resulted from a mistake). In the main text we suggest adding a second motivic slur over the part of the figure performed by the R.H., keeping the triplet slurs, as an exception, which in this case help one navigate the rhythmic structure of the figuration, different from the division into hands. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions , Inaccuracies in FE , Errors in GE |

The missing slur must be considered a defect of notation. Therefore, in the main text we include the slur added in GE and EE. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions , GE revisions |

According to us, the slurs in the sources resulted from the FE engraver having misunderstood [A]. It is difficult to assume that Chopin would have wanted to pay a particular attention to the 3 middle notes of the bottom voice figure with the help of slurs, omitting the thematic top voice. It is most likely that the slurs in [A] were between the top voice notes and referred to the top voice, covering the entire bottom voice figure as well. category imprint: Editorial revisions issues: Inaccuracies in FE |
